Israel’s Iron Dome
Despite the rocket firings against Israel in previous wars and conflicts, hundreds of rockets were launched at the same time in the last conflict and they reached places far from Gaza, such as Tel Aviv. Eyes were on Israel’s low-altitude air defense system called the “Iron Dome”. While Israel highlighted the success of the system with videos about the moments when the Iron Dome prevented rockets fired from Gaza, some of the rockets that this system could not prevent fell to settlements in Israel and caused loss of life.
Israel’s “Iron Dome” system started to be developed with the financial support of the USA after the Lebanon War in 2006 and was put into use in 2011. The radar of the system detects the launched rockets and their trajectory, if there is a civilian settlement or an important infrastructure facility that needs to be protected where the rocket will crash, the missile is automatically fired from the battery and the rocket is destroyed in the air. If the place where the rocket will fall is empty land, the system will not destroy the rocket and the rocket is expected to crash. Israel announced that the success of the system was over 90 percent.
