Americans born in Jerusalem can list Israel as place of birth on passport, US announces
Trump administration is expected soon to announce that the US passports of Americans born in Jerusalem can list Israel as the country of birth.
Before now, Jerusalem was identified without a country because of its contentious status as Israel’s self-declared capital.
The latest move comes a week before the US elections, in which Republican Donald Trump is standing against Democrat Joe Biden.
On his side, Mr. Biden has said he disapproves of the relocation by the US of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018 but says he will not reverse the step.
After Trump officially recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, the US has since moved its Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
Last year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said changing the policy on the passports was under consideration.
Pompeo announced the new position on Twitter saying ” Consistent with President DonaldTrump’s policy, I am happy to announce US citizens born in Jerusalem can now elect to list their place of birth as either “Jerusalem” or “Israel” on their passports. We remain committed to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.”
On the other side, the Trump administration has proposed a peace plan for the Palestinians and Israelis, however, “the peace plan” seems to be heavily weighted in favor of Israel’s positions.
