As part of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic in Greece, the time given to healthcare workers to be vaccinated expired on 1 September.
Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris, in his speech in Parliament, said that 6 ,412 healthcare workers and 500 ambulance officers who did not receive the coronavirus vaccine were dismissed.
Plevris stated that 5,594 of the 6,412 workers who were suspended from duty worked in hospitals and 818 of them worked in primary health institutions.
Noting that compulsory vaccination has shown its effect, Minister Thanos Plevris said, “Before compulsory vaccination started, we were talking about the percentages reaching double digits and more for the unvaccinated in the health system.” Plevris also emphasized that, as a result of mandatory vaccination, the number of vaccinated employees in a hospital has increased from 35 percent to 87 percent. They are ready to dismiss more than 10,000 healthcare workers. A new date will be determined next week for the workers who have received the first dose of the vaccine to return to work.
