Brazil: Brazilians should “face the virus”
Brazil’s President Bolsonaro has just had a corona infection and seems safer than ever that the virus is nothing more than a little flu. He regretted the deaths, but “people die every day” is life. The Brazilians had nothing to fear.
After overcoming his Corona infection, Brazil’s head of state Jair Bolsonaro has asked his countrymen to “face the virus”. There was nothing to fear, the right-wing president told reporters on Friday. “I knew that one day I would get infected because I think that unfortunately almost everyone here will get infected at some point,” continued Bolsonaro.
Brazil’s president has been heavily criticized for its crisis management in the corona pandemic. “I regret the deaths. But people die every day, because of many things. That’s life,” he said. Bolsonaro announced more than three weeks ago that he had been infected with the coronavirus. He then took over the quarantine of the presidential residence in Brasília.
Several tests were positive, last Saturday he then tweeted that a new test for him had been negative. In a live broadcast on Thursday evening, he said that he felt weak after the corona infection and got “mold in the lungs” in quarantine. In the meantime, the President’s wife Michelle has also tested positive for the virus.
Brazil worst affected worldwide
Bolsonaro is known for downplaying the health crisis. The 65-year-old initially described the illness as “little flu”. He had also repeatedly violated a mask requirement in the capital city of Brasília and disregarded the distance requirement. It was only on Thursday that he greeted his followers in the northeastern state of Piaui at his first public event since his illness and took off his face mask with loud cheers.
With more than 2.6 million infections and over 96,000 deaths; Brazil is the second most affected country by the corona pandemic. Only the United States has more victims.
