Brazil is now overtaking Russia about corona infections
Brazil is increasingly becoming the focus of the corona crisis. With a rapid increase in new infections, the South American country is now overtaking Russia. The government expects a high level of public debt.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned about the rapidly increasing number of infections in South America. The continent “has become a new epicenter of the disease,” said WHO expert Michael Ryan. “There is great concern about these countries, but Brazil is the most affected,” said Ryan.
The country has become the central source of the pandemic in South America in recent days. 330,890 infected people have now been officially registered, the Ministry of Health said. With that, Russia was overtaken. With 20,803 newly reported infections, the country also reported the highest daily growth so far.
Record national debt
Besides, 1,001 new deaths were announced on Friday evening – this is the second day in a row with more than 1,000 reported deaths and the third-highest daily increase so far. There are now a total of 21,048 infections-related deaths. However, experts assume that the number of unreported cases is much higher because comparatively little testing is carried out in Brazil.
The Brazilian government is expecting a budget deficit and record national debt. According to a presentation by the Ministry of Economy published on Friday (local time), the liabilities are likely to reach 93.5 percent of the gross domestic product this year, after around 78 percent recently. New debt is expected to increase by more than nine percent this year.
Brazil’s economy is on the way to the worst recession since the start of economic statistics in 1900 due to the Corona crisis. The government is expecting a 4.7 percent decline in gross domestic product. This leads to tax shortfalls for the state, which has also put together multi-million dollar rescue programs.
