Brazil‘s Supreme Court has ruled that an investigation be launched against far-right President Jair Bolsonaro for his alleged election fraudulent in the country. Bolsonaro said he opposed the investigation order, reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision to investigate against him. Emphasizing that he would not come to testify, Bolsonaro said, “Come, raid the Presidential Palace.”
Addressing a group of supporters at the entrance of the Alvorada Palace in the capital Brasilia, Bolsonaro said, “Who will they send to raid the Presidential Palace? The federal police or the armed forces?”
While voting in Brazil is done electronically in polling stations, Bolsonaro has long criticized this system that has been implemented in the country since 1996. Demanding the use of ballot papers in addition to the electronic system in the October 2022 elections, Bolsonaro argues that the use of paper ballots facilitates the manipulation of the elections. According to opinion polls, 66 years old Bolsonaro is falling behind former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the presidential race.
Critics say Bolsonaro, like former U.S. President Donald Trump, is sowing doubts in case he loses next year’s presidential election. He has threatened not to accept the result if the system is not changed.
