Diego Maradona died at the age of 60. The Argentine football legend died in his homeland. Just a few days ago, Maradona had to undergo brain surgery.

The Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona is dead. He died at the age of 60, as the Argentine soccer association AFA announced. “The Argentine Football Association and its President Claudio Tapia feel deep pain over the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona. You will always be in our hearts,” tweeted the association. The Argentine government ordered a three-day state mourning, according to reports, a state funeral is also planned.
“You brought us to the top of the world. You made us very happy. You were the greatest of all. Thank you for being there, Diego. We will miss you for a lifetime,” said President Alberto Fernandez with condolences. The Brazilian football icon Pelé wrote on Twitter: “What sad news. I’ve lost a good friend, the world is a legend. Hopefully one day we can play in heaven together.”

According to media reports, Maradona died of a heart attack in his home in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires. Called paramedics could therefore not resuscitate him. Most recently, Maradona had been operated on for a cerebral hemorrhage in a hospital near the Argentine capital and then spent a few days in the clinic.
On his 60th birthday on October 30th, he had already made a battered impression. Before the first game of his club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata after the Corona break, he came briefly to the stadium to receive congratulations and gifts. However, he had to be supported by two companions while walking. Maradona followed the game from home on the advice of his doctor. Argentina’s soccer hero has repeatedly struggled with health problems.
In 2000 doctors diagnosed a heart condition caused by cocaine use. This was followed, among other things, by withdrawal treatments and a stomach reduction. Maradona was considered one of the best footballers of all time. He grew up on the outskirts of Buenos Aires in poor conditions and was discovered at a young age by the first division club Argentinos Juniors. He made his debut in the first division at the age of 15, played for the Argentine national team for the first time at the age of 16, and was voted South America’s Footballer of the Year for the first time at 19.
