Germany: Fear of second wave
The number of infections shows that the corona pandemic is far from over. Politicians and businesses urge them to follow the rules of conduct. At the same time, they warn of the dramatic consequences of new everyday restrictions.
In view of the increasing number of corona infections; the warnings of reason and the warnings of new restrictions are becoming increasingly clear. Business representatives in particular warned politicians of dramatic consequences if public life were to be shut down again. Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff also warned, “We cannot afford a second lockdown.” told the Funke media group: “This would hardly be able to cope with our economy and would ultimately also have a negative impact on the welfare state and its stability.” Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier is now thinking aloud about tougher sanctions for corona-minded people.
The President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW); Marcel Fratzscher said that ” second wave could be economically more damaging than the first wave”. “Because many companies are stricken; have high debts and hardly any reserves.” The US experience shows that clear rules and early restrictions are important in order to keep a wave of infections as low as possible and to limit the economic damage. “Only if the overwhelming majority of the population behaves responsibly can the restrictions be limited in time and the damage minimized;” he warned.
The Veronika Grimm economy also warned of a sustained economic weakness should there be another lockdown. She spoke in favor of “addressing regional infection events with tailor-made concepts for combating pandemics and health protection regionally and in a targeted manner”. If this does not succeed; “a phase of weakness that will last much longer is to be expected”; said the member of the expert council.
