The prefabricated office called ‘Hanare Zen’ is 91 cm wide and 1.8 meters long. Inside, there are electrical outlets, a desk and a bench-type table. KI Star Real Estate, a popular home construction company, began taking orders for Hanare Zen on September 6 in hopes of finding a market among those struggling to work in cramped homes.
Ideal For Getting Away From Family Members
‘Hanare’ means separate or detached in Japanese.
Chisa Uchiyama, spokesperson for KI Star Real Estate, said, “We created the Hanare building as a kind of storage space and with the situation in the pandemic came the idea to develop Hanare Zen as a workspace. The use of ‘Zen’ in the name represents the minimalist concept that reduces size and features to just what is necessary. It’s designed for people who find it difficult to find a comfortable place to work in their home and don’t want to run into family members,” he added.
However, Hanere Zen attracts attention with its very high price. The price of a detached office building is 547,800 Japanese yen (approximately $4,980).
On the other hand, 70 percent of Tokyo’s population is made up of people who live in apartments and cannot use a structure like Hanare Zen. For these individuals, working in their car has become a way of finding peace and quiet. Demand is growing for a range of accessories to support in-car operation, including stands for steering-wheel-mounted computers, folding tables, mini fans, portable batteries, and window panes.
On the other hand, in the Kawasaki neighborhood in the south of Tokyo, the Tokyu Railway Company refurbished old train cars and turned them into remote workspaces that can be rented for 200 Japanese yen (about $2) per hour.
The company has also converted some of the ticket offices at the stations into shared office spaces, which it began leasing in July.
On the other hand, 90 percent of Japan’s major companies implementing telework plan to continue to do so, even after the pandemic is under control, according to a survey by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper earlier this year.
