Kim Jong Un: Give us Your Dogs to Eat
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un ordered the confiscation of pet dogs in the nation’s capital, saying that the dogs represent Western “decadence”. While dog owners fear that the meat of their dogs will go to the people’s dinner table, due to the food crisis the country is going through.
Last July, Kim declared that owning dogs in North Korea is against the law, because it is a “distorted trend of bourgeois ideology.” as he said.
The British “Daily Mail” quoted the South Korean newspaper, “Chosun Ilbo”, that “the authorities have forced families that have dogs to abandon them, and they have already been confiscated.”
“Some dogs are sent to state-run zoos, while others are sold to dog meat restaurants,” the newspaper added.
A recent United Nations report said that up to 60% of North Korea’s population face “widespread food shortages”, exacerbated by international sanctions imposed on the regime because of the nuclear missile programs.
On the other side, the borders with China have been closed due to the emerging corona virus, as Beijing is a major source of food for Pyongyang.
While the biggest impact was due to natural disasters, as floods wiped out crops in a number of major cities in the country, which forced the North Korean leader to feed the flood victims with his own grain reserves.
The North Korean leader lately announced that he would face the situation with courage, stressing that he would not accept any foreign aid due to the floods in Pyongyang.
