Mesut Özil at Secret Meeting with Fenerbahçe
The rumor of Mesut Özil’s move from Arsenal FC to Fenerbahçe Istanbul is much debated. Now Özil is said to have met secretly with the Fener bosses. A change in winter is probably off the table, but there is still hope for an agreement.
Ex-national player Mesut Özil seems to lead the way out of his footballing impasse at Arsenal in more concrete ways. In Turkey, ex-champion Fenerbahçe Istanbul is expressing great interest in a timely commitment of the 32-year-old. According to Turkish media, the ex-international is said to have met with the bosses of the Istanbul club.
The salary question still difficult
“90 percent of Özil will join us during the winter break”, “Bild am Sonntag” had quoted Fener’s advisory board member Murat Zorlu in the previous days. However, this plan has apparently failed. The Turkish newspaper “Cumhuriyet” writes that although official steps have been taken for the Özil transfer, the change could not take place until the summer.
Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç and sports director Emre Belözoğlu are said to have met Özil during a visit to London. According to “Cumhyriet”, Koç first asked about the possible timing of a change and the German ex-international replied that he could not leave London in January, but that he would be able to leave after the season.
Özil earns around 21 million euros in a year at Arsenal
The most difficult part of the secret meeting was the question of salary. The Fenerbahçe bosses offered an annual salary of around five million euros plus bonus payments. Özil, who earns around 21 million euros in a year at Arsenal, is said to have demanded eight million euros net. Both parties plan to hold another meeting in June to bring the salary negotiations to a conclusion.
Özil has no future at Arsenal. The midfielder made his last appearance for the Gunners at the beginning of March before the Corona interruption.
