Re-counting Would Cost Trump a lot of Money
In the presidential election, Donald Trump just lost in the state of Wisconsin. But not so close that a recount would make sense. If the elected president wants to check the vote anyway, he must bear the costs himself.
According to the authorities, the recount of all votes that the elected US President Donald Trump is aiming for in Wisconsin’s US state would cost around $ 7.9 million – the equivalent of 6.7 million euros. So far, however, there has been no request for a recount, said the head of the electoral authority, Meagan Wolfe, on Monday (local time). Outstanding final results are expected by Tuesday, so the recount must be requested by Wednesday and paid in advance, she said.
Democrat Joe Biden prevailed over Trump by a narrow margin of 20,470 votes or 0.62 percent in the Midwestern state. The state would only bear the cost of a recount if the lead were less than 0.25 percent.
Should Trump decide to take the step, as announced, the chances of something changing in the result would be vanishingly small. A recount of the votes after the 2016 election only resulted in a deviation of 131 votes.
Trump’s campaign team announced immediately after the November 3rd election that they would seek a recount. The Republicans have since been vigorously soliciting donations to cover the costs of the election’s legal aftermath, so they could probably finance lawsuits and recounts. However, given Biden’s lead, it is unclear whether Trump would be willing to bear a recount cost.
Wisconsin has the votes of ten electors in the presidential election. According to the results so far, Biden leads nationwide with 306 to 232 votes. He needs at least 270 votes to win. The electoral college will vote on December 14th. In southern Georgia, where the result was also close to Biden, the state itself initiated the votes’ recount. It is free for both candidates.
