Rinspeed City Snap – The Mobile Packing Station
Critics complain that parcel delivery is extremely inefficient these days. A new system from Rinspeed could save time, money, and emissions. The “City Snap” is a mobile packing station for the last mile.
Rinspeed is known for wanting to improve the mobile world with his ideas. The latest innovation from the Swiss company is a mobile Packstation for parcel delivery. The “City Snap” is based on a modular delivery vehicle concept for the last mile that was developed some time ago. However, the parcel is not brought directly to the recipient with the “City Snap” but automatically sets up packing stations in the neighborhood where the shipments can be picked up.
The City Snap’s drive is, of course, electricity
According to Rinspeed, mobile stations are significantly more flexible than fixed packing stations, but they avoid heavy delivery traffic in the cities like these. The Swiss anticipate that the system could make around half of all parcel service vehicles available today. The visionaries calculate the CO2 savings at 6 percent per package. There are also cost advantages for the logistics company; despite the new technology’s investments, around 17 percent could be saved per box.
The City Snap’s drive is, of course, electric. Since the development of fully autonomous vehicles is still a long way off, the delivery vehicle is controlled by a human driver. A robot mobile is also conceivable in perspective.
According to Rinspeed, talks are currently underway with potential partners for a pilot project. The concept is to be officially presented in early 2021. After Snap, Microsnap, and Metrosnap, the City Snap is the fourth future study from the vehicle developer’s range. The models are intended to provide suggestions for the future development of passenger and goods transport. So far, however, none of the vehicles has made it into series production.
