Struggling with the second wave of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the country recorded a large increase in cases of mucormycosis, known as “black fungus”.
In the statement made by the Ministry of Health of India, it was shared that the number of people infected with mucormycosis disease reached 45,374 and that 4,332 people who were infected with the disease lost their lives.
Health Minister Bharati Pravin Pawar, in a written response to the upper house of parliament, stated that the most deaths due to black fungus were recorded in the states of Maharashtra with 1,129 people and Gujarat with 656 people.
The Minister of Health stated that 20 thousand 277 infected patients are under treatment and 19 thousand 73 patients have recovered.
According to the Ministry of Health, cases of mucormycosis infection in the country have been on a downward trend for the past two months.
It is stated that black fungus disease affects people with weakened immune systems.
