Contrary to the falling birth rates worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, Germany has reached the highest birth rates in the last 23 years. In Germany 6 percent increase in birth rates was recorded in February, the increase rate in March was 10 percent. With 65 thousand 903 births in March, the 65.000 level was exceeded for the first time after 1998.
The increase has been observed 9 months after May when Germany first went into quarantine with the first wave of coronavirus. In an earlier statement, it was reported that birth rates decreased by 0.6 percent in 2020, and it was announced that it remained stable in the first month of 2021.
While the Statistics Office said that the birth rates remained stable in countries such as Spain, France, and Belgium. They announced that there was an increase, especially in eastern European countries. But of course, with the pandemic, there was also a decrease in the birth rate of many countries.
Rates in China fell 18 percent year on year to the lowest level since 1961, while in the USA it fell by 4 percent compared to 2020, the lowest level since 1979.
Obstetricians attributed the increase to reasons such as Germany‘s ‘family-friendly’ policies, high refugee numbers, and the country’s assistance to those unable to work during quarantine.
