A ‘safe escape route’ was created after warnings about possibility of gunfire were given to personnel working at the base near Washington.
“If you don’t have a safe route to escape, resort to hiding. Barricade your door, turn off the lights and the bell on your cell phone, and stay quiet. Resist possible attack while you hide.” the warning said.
According to initial reports, personnel at the base were called to call 911 or base security when they saw a suspect ‘a medium-built black male carrying a Gucci bag’.
Base officials later updated the alert, urging staff to look for the two men, one said to have dreadlocks and wearing ripped jeans, and the other was wearing a white top and green pants. The second person was likely injured, according to the center. About 15 minutes later, the base updated the alarm a second time, describing one of the wanted as a black male of ‘medium length’ and ‘wearing blue or green trousers’.
Local media reported a heavy police presence in the area, while security teams were said to be scanning the facility and possibly deploying a police helicopter to assist in the search.
WTOP-FM reporter Megan Cloherty said multiple sources confirmed that she heard gunfire around the base. Senior Airman Kevin Tanenbaum confirmed to the reporter that an armed suspect had entered the base.
