The USA wants to terminate the “Open Skies” agreement
Russia and the West have been allowed to spy on each other by plane for over 20 years. This is how the trust should be created. But the United States now accuses Moscow of violating the rules several times. Besides, technical progress has probably overtaken the contract.
According to US President Donald Trump, the US government plans to withdraw from the “Open Skies” agreement. “Russia did not comply with the treaty,” Trump said in front of journalists in Washington. “So we’ll get out until they stick to it.” The formal exit will be carried out in six months according to the regulations. It is the Trump administration’s last withdrawal from an important international agreement.
The treaty between NATO and the former Warsaw Pact was signed almost 30 years ago to reduce the risk of war between Russia and the West. It allows both sides to conduct reconnaissance flights over each other’s territory to build confidence that neither side is planning an attack.
The decision to opt-out was preceded by a six-month review; one of the government officials said. “During this review period; it became clear that it is no longer in America’s best interest; to remain a party to the Open Skies Treaty.”; Russia had violated the treaty several times and applied it in a way; that could become a military threat to the United States and its allies.
