WHO Begins The Search in Wuhan
After a long turmoil, China allows experts from the World Health Organization to research the origins of the coronavirus there themselves. Now more is known about the mission, whose members are already downplaying expectations.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the international team of experts to investigate the origin of the coronavirus will begin its work in Wuhan. There the first cases of infections with the then-new virus became known about a year ago. So far it was unclear how freely the international experts could move around and when a trip to Wuhan would take place. They are supposed to arrive on Thursday.
“The studies are starting in Wuhan”
Then, however, the immigrants first have to complete a two-week quarantine. “The studies are starting in Wuhan, China, to identify the possible source of infection in the early cases,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Scientific facts will lead to hypotheses that are the basis for further, long-term studies.” The findings are important in order to better deal with similar threats in the future.
Foreign researchers continue to suspect bats from southern China as the origin
China had repeatedly delayed the trip of the international experts on behalf of the WHO, but the green light was given on Monday. The government fears it will be blamed for the pandemic.
Chinese authorities have been casting doubts for months as to whether the virus even originated in China. Reference is made to unconfirmed reports that possible infections may have existed in other countries before. Reference is also made to today’s virus traces on imported frozen goods, which are interpreted as an indication that the pathogen could have been introduced from abroad.
